Goat Meat 4 Dogs - Low Fat, High Protein & Natural
Posted by tamara under: Dog Health.
If you can buy goat meat, even older goats and someone that processes it, you can feed your dogs goat meat. Its lower in fat then even chicken and higher in protein then beef! No kidding! Older goats are not sold as much due to the meat being more tough, however your dogs teeth can easily chew it and if you are having the goat processed you can request it all ground. After processing you can get your meat down to around 3.50 a pound.

Dog Food Issues- Please read
Posted by tamara under: Dog Health; News.
We’ve posted about dog food issues and the truth is that there are few foods that meet the needs of dogs and yet are healthy, natural and safe. Homemade dog food is the best route and even though you think its expensive and time consuming the reality is that your dog will live longer and your vet bills will go down so its a trade off. We all know the nightmares of commercial dog food and a simple search will show you that most are filled with ingredients that are unsafe for human consumption so why would you feed your dog this?

Dog Gas - ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Posted by tamara under: Dog Health.
My rottie, Bear, will clear a room in no time flat! I have been sleeping and awakened by his gas! Its embarrassing when people come over and the whole house smells like awful. I try lighting incense, burning candles but nothing takes away that smell. There are days where he does this all day and often I would hear his stomach making nosies as he lied there ripping one after another. I know he must have been uncomfortable. I searched on the internet and of course there are toms of very expensive supplements for you and your pets. With 4 dogs, 2 large, I just can’t afford some of this and still feed them a good dog food.
Dogs anatomy is much like our own. This is why when you go to the vet they will prescribe human grade antibiotics, etc. In fact if you have a healthy diet- low fat, low sugars/carbs, your dog could easily eat exactly what you eat. So I researched this in humans and how to naturally help gas. YOGURT! Let me give that a try! I can buy a large plain container at Sam’s (must have active cultures like Yoplait ) for under 2.00. It works great and they LOVE it too. In fact I use to add a little bit of wet food to the dry to get them to eat all at once but now I add a tablespoon of yogurt to each meal. Yogurt has many benefits for dogs and humans. An even better probiotic is cultured milk called Keffir, however it is normally quite a bit more expensive. Any active culture yogurt should work quite well.
“Research results have been mixed when it comes to the relationship between yogurt cultures and immune function, yeast infections and lowered risk of certain cancers. Animal studies suggest that yogurt with active starter cultures and probiotics may enhance certain immune functions. …. read more of this article here

Joint Pain Dogs & People
Posted by tamara under: Dog Health.

Most of my dogs are older and suffered from joint pain. I lost my lab, Little Man because of kidney failure after years of being on medication that took a toll on his organs. Much later I had read about glucosamine and decided to try it on myself and my dogs. At first I started purchasing joint juices and joint pills and some of them worked pretty well, however they were so expensive and it was myself and 2 dogs taking it. While searching at Walmart I found this unflavored powder that combine gelatin and glucosamine. It works great! You simple put a scoop in your baby’s dog food once a day. It takes about 2 months before you start to see a difference but you will. It works great for humans too suffering from joint pain and Arthritis.
You can buy this at Walmart, however I found it the cheapest (12 buck!) here online and you can set up automatic delivery making it super easy! CLICK HERE
I also give my dogs one fish oil caplet per day which I think not only helps with over-all bone health but great for their skin and Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain heart and vascular health. You can spend a lot of money for the exact same thing. I found it HERE 5.19 for 173 softgels. You can poke it with a pin and squeeze the smelling fish oil on their food which they LOVE or most dogs will just eat the pill mixed right in their food.
Joint help requires a good health system for you and your dog. Supplements alone will not work as well. Get out and move around with your dog. Take a daily walk. Even 20 min a day is great and will do you both a world of good. Go down to the riverwalk at Dan River, its lovely, a few times a week, enjoy nature, walk and meet new friends! If you need a walking buddy email me and I’ll let you know the days we are down there walking.
