Goat Meat 4 Dogs – Low Fat, High Protein & Natural

If you can buy goat meat, even older goats and someone that processes it, you can feed your dogs goat meat. Its lower in fat then even chicken and higher in protein then beef! No kidding! Older goats are not sold as much due to the meat being more tough, however your dogs teeth can easily chew it and if you are having the goat processed you can request it all ground. After processing you can get your meat down to around 3.50 a pound.

Dog Food Issues- Please read

We’ve posted about dog food issues and the truth is that there are few foods that meet the needs of dogs and yet are healthy, natural and safe. Homemade dog food is the best route and even though you think its expensive and time consuming the reality is that your dog will live longer and your vet bills will go down so its a trade off. We all know the nightmares of commercial dog food and a simple search will show you that most are filled with ingredients that are unsafe for human consumption so why would you feed your dog this?

Meet Lehu, Molly Brown & Rosco

Lehu, Molly Brown and Rosco had a great time. Of course in this video Lehu wants to bark at me wondering what I’m doing. Rosco is kissing Molly Brown on the mouth. These three had the best time and simply wore each other out!

Rosco the Boxer Dump Puppy

This is a little boxer puppy we found at the dump. It appears someone dropped him off. He was hungry and happy to come to live out at the farm. He has a serious under-bite and his tongue always sticks out. I was going to find him a home but we decided to keep him. He’s really smart and cute.

Natural Produce & Farm Fresh Products

greenhouse.jpg

This year/season we will be growing all kinds of fresh natural produce. We don’t use pesticides and most fertilizers are organic.  I do admit that I use miracle Gro a few times. Everything else is organic.

If you are interested in produce during the season please contact us using the form. We are seeking customers interested in weekly or bi-weekly pick-ups. We haven’t worked out all the details, however we are taking this year to figure out a few things and looking for a handful of steady customers that want a great deal and can pick up out at the farm. We are talking to several other farms we may buy farm fresh canned foods from that you can pick up here as well. Please also add your name to our newsletter.

Dog Gas – ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

My rottie, Bear, will clear a room in no time flat! I have been sleeping and awakened by his gas! Its embarrassing when people come over and the whole house smells like awful. I try lighting incense, burning candles but nothing takes away that smell. There are days where he does this all day and often I would hear his stomach making nosies as he lied there ripping one after another. I know he must have been uncomfortable. I searched on the internet and of course there are toms of very expensive supplements for you and your pets. With 4 dogs, 2 large, I just can’t afford some of this and still feed them a good dog food.

Dogs anatomy is much like our own. This is why when you go to the vet they will prescribe human grade antibiotics, etc. In fact if you have a healthy diet- low fat, low sugars/carbs, your dog could easily eat exactly what you eat. So I researched this in humans and how to naturally help gas. YOGURT!  Let me give that a try! I can buy a large plain container at Sam’s (must have active cultures like Yoplait ) for under 2.00. It works great and they LOVE it too.  In fact I use to add a little bit of wet food to the dry to get them to eat all at once but now I add a tablespoon of yogurt to each meal.  Yogurt has many benefits for dogs and humans. An even better probiotic is cultured milk called Keffir, however it is normally quite a bit more expensive.  Any active culture yogurt should work quite well.

Research results have been mixed when it comes to the relationship between yogurt cultures and immune function, yeast infections and lowered risk of certain cancers. Animal studies suggest that yogurt with active starter cultures and probiotics may enhance certain immune functions. …. read more of this article here

Joint Pain Dogs & People

200.jpg

Most of my dogs are older and suffered from joint pain. I lost my lab, Little Man because of kidney failure after years of being on medication that took a toll on his organs. Much later I had read about  glucosamine and decided to try it on myself and my dogs. At first I started purchasing joint juices and joint pills and some of them worked pretty well, however they were so expensive and it was myself and 2 dogs taking it. While searching at Walmart I found this unflavored powder that combine gelatin and glucosamine.  It works great!  You simple put a scoop in your baby’s dog food once a day. It takes about 2 months before you start to see a difference but you will.  It works great for humans too suffering from joint pain and Arthritis.

You can buy this at Walmart, however I found it the cheapest (12 buck!) here online and you can set up automatic delivery making it super easy!  CLICK HERE

I also give my dogs one fish oil caplet per day which I think not only helps with over-all bone health but great for their skin and Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain heart and vascular health.  You can spend a lot of money for the exact same thing. I found it HERE 5.19 for 173 softgels. You can poke it with a pin and squeeze the smelling fish oil on their food which they LOVE or most dogs will just eat the pill mixed right in their food.

Joint help requires a good health system for you and your dog. Supplements alone will not work as well. Get out and move around with your dog. Take a daily walk. Even 20 min a day is great and will do you both a world of good. Go down to the riverwalk at Dan River, its lovely, a few times a week, enjoy nature, walk and meet new friends!  If you need a walking buddy email me and I’ll let you know the days we are down there walking.

Life on The Farm – Some Farm Pics & Video

Just a few video clip of the farm & some of the stuff that goes on around here. This video is about 4 min. It includes a picture of my handsome rooster Cletus and a few others that run loose. My pet pigs, Elmer and lilly, talking to me, the inside of my barn which also shows the chicken coop we made for laying hens. That coop has a totally enclosed outside area. This way I don’t have to hunt all over the yard for eggs. You’ll also see an old smoke house that has been here a long time and my large greenhouse. See video link below…

Say hello to Blue and Clare. Blue is the husky and has been here quite a few times. In fact he’s been here at least 1/2 dozen times or more. This is Clare’s first visit so she’s still a little nervous, however she and Blue quickly became friends. This area they are in is one of 3 areas. This we call Bow Wow Cabin. It has a ramp in and out with a small grassy fenced area. Inside they have cable TV featuring The Animal Planet, Music, big floppy chair, sofa and heat or air. Very posh!

Maggie and Alaska

alaskaandmaggie.jpg

Alaska, the white lab mix, has been here before and a sweet little girl. This was Maggies first time. She’s a 3 year old pointer that was fascinated with all the animals on the farm. When I took her out on a leash in the front she could smell or sense the deer in the pastur, point her tail and lift her leg. Thank goodness she was on a leash. In the video below Maggie is wanting the chickens in the front yard so she is jumping up and down trying to look out the windows in the door. Very funny. Then Alaska goes over to tell her to STOP IT MAGGIE! lol

Matilda and Sharky

matilda_sharky.jpg

Meet Matilda and Sharky. Their family is from Blacksburg, VA. They went to Disney World while Mat & Shark stayed at Dancing Creek. These are two sweet dogs but very mischievous. In the winter when its slow I keep dogs in the main house with me. During the night they somehow got the boxes of treats off the dining table and had a party! I’m honestly surprised they didn’t get a tummy ache. There were wrappers EVERYWHERE but not one single treat left!   They are very affectionate.

Below is a video clip I took with my NEW Flip Video Recorder.

Winter Updates – Dog Boarding & More

We had a busy holiday! Now that winter and a New Year is here it will be slow the next few months. We are still boarding dogs but you should try to call ahead of time. When its slow we often take mini trips. just give us a call and see if we’re around. 434-685-1673, however email is always a FASTER way to get me. I admit that I’m really bad about checking voicemail but always check email.

This spring and summer we expect to be even busier then last. Starting Feb you should book ahead. We hope to expand this year and put stables in for horse boarding. We would also like to put some facilities in for people to come out and spend a day or a few hours with their dogs. Its a great way to meet friends and let your dog have some fun with others. Make sure you’re on our mailing list for updates.

Happy New Year & thank you for your business!

sadie.jpg

Sadie redefines personality. You’ve never met a dog that had more energy then Sadie. Normally when dog is high energy they make you nuts trying to keep up with them but Queen Sadie is still as dainty as they come. She is affectionate, well behaved and the sweetest little girl you’ll ever meet.

Sadie is about 1 ½ years old. She is an English Setter. She lives in

Danville with her parents David and Elizabeth. She is a regular boarder here and we just love her to death!

Meet Cagney, Cue and Wonder Dog

img_1115.jpgimg_1117.jpg

Cagney is still a puppy (one year old now!)  With TONS of energy and Cue is 4 years old. Both are Aussies that live with their mommy Tonya in Providence, NC. They were our very FIRST boarders.

The orange dog with them is Wonder Dog, a rescued dog I brought up from Florida. We call him Wonder Dog because we wondered what kind of dog he is. He smiles like a hyena! Wonder Dog is now 2 years old and the social director here at the farm. He shows everyon how to go down the ramp, where to poop and keeps everyone running & playing.

You can see the buckets of water we put out. These are changed a few times a day with fresh water and when it’s really hot we dump ice in it. They LOVE ice when its hot.

Email me using the contact form here and I’ll tell you what I have left.  Sorry no shipping. Pick up only.

This fall I’ll have fruit trees such as apples, pears, cherries and more. Please add your name to our newsletter.

Meet Blaze

Little Blaze

Blaze is a 2 year old Rat Terrier from Danville. She is awfully spoiled and follows Tamara everywhere she goes. She’s been a guest at the farm a number of times and makes herself right at home. She sleeps with Tamara and loves to get under the covers.

Blazes mommy, Darlene told us an interesting story about Blaze. One day her husband came home from work to let Blaze out to go potty. When he walked into the house Blaze went crazy barking and acting strangely. She kept going to the closet barking until he opened the door and saw the water heater smoking and starting to flame. Had he not gone there or had Blaze not brought this to his attention they would have lost everything they own including their beloved Blaze. Thank God!

Click the video player to see her. I have not figured out how to edit or rotate the camera yet but you can see what a fun personality she has.
