I decided since I was allergic I couldn’t keep them in the house and they drove the dogs nuts! I have one cat that thinks he’s a dog.

The inside is floored with cedar chip bedding. They have beds and it’s like a cozy little cabin. You can’t see it but the top is completely closed in with chicken wire. This summer I will build a waterfall pond with some fish.

This is a crew of long term dogs here at Dancing Creek. Currently we have a total of 6 dogs that have been here 3 months or longer, some staying for a year. It’s rare that we have 5 together in one area, all the time, but these 5 are the best of friends. I honestly never seen a pack of dogs get along so well. I can give them treats together, feed, play, almost anything and no fighting. They play, cuddle and all are perfect together.

Rudy (3 legs) Wonder Dog (right) Mulligan (back)

Ruby and Mulligan live in Virginia. They are staying for 6 months while their family remodels. Ruby has three legs but this doesnt stop her from jumping on the table and hanging out. Mulligan is the oldest of the group and pretty mellow. Wonder Dog is a rescue I’ve had for 8 years.

Rascal is camera shy

Rowdy IS rowdy!

Above is Rascal and Rowdy. Rascal runs and hides every time I pull the camera out. He and Rowdy are here for a year while their family is working Italy. Rowdy is one wild boy! Rascal more laid back. Rascal loves laying on the deck and prefers spending as much time as he can outside. He also likes to hang out with me while I do chores around the farm. He’s one of the few dogs I can let off leash and know he won’t take off. I could never do this with Rowdy!

On the ground is straw we put down in the winter to keep things clean. Every month new straw and hay goes down. The dog areas are always swept and clean. Its a full time job because these dogs are always on vacation and play non-stop. Everything looks clean now but it doesnt always look so clean! Especially after a big rain, lots of playful muddy dogs. In fact if you see the picture of Rowdy the floor is wet. “Someone” loves to play in the water bucket.

Thursday is Thanksgiving and we have two turkeys. One for me and my family and one for the dogs. The dogs get turkey, sweet potatos and yogurt (to help digest all that good food!).

Taking care of foster dogs long term is a great responsibility. Its important to us that we provide a loving, home like environment for dogs that must be away from their families. In fact we probably spoil them even more because of this. Nice long brushing, petting, walking and as you can see non-stop playing!

Each area is cooled or heated to provide a comfortable environment for your dog.

We are a small boarding facility and not like most boarding facilities. Imagine your dog going to summer camp or staying with trusted relatives. They are loved, cared for and their needs are considered. Most all dogs have a great time here.

In addition to daily boarding we offer long term foster care for dogs. Long term dog foster care is two months and longer. We do offer a special rate for long term foster care and provide updates, photos and videos.

Starting in Sept we are offering a special monthly rate for dog walking. Between the hours of 12-4PM I can come to your home, take your pet or pets for a walk play, brush, whatever you’d like done in the 30 min I’m there. You can request longer times or if you are close to a park (within 10 min by car) you can even blend in a weekly park trip for an hour.

We all get really busy and it’s tough being home all day. This gives a much needed potty break and a chance to get some hugs and kisses.

Walks and visits are Monday-Friday - between the hours of noon and 4pm. The only persons walking your dogs will be myself and a family member.

$300.00 a month – 5 days a week for 30 min a trip – each park trip (60 min) add additional 25.00 – each additional dog, same family, add $50.00 – You can combine with a neighbor if their house is within two houses and the dogs get along with each other enjoy playing.

0r a more affordable option.

Once you sign up you are billed monthly. Space is limited and its an ongoing program. If you’re interested and in the Danville/Brosville area use the contact form to contact me.

Throughout the year I have to deal with pet hair daily, however nothing compares to the amount of hair I clean in the summer. Brooms push it all over the place and swifter is more trouble than its worth. I’ve gone through a few vacuums the past year. I like using a vacuum but most are cumbersome and don’t suck hard enough.

Then I found Eureka 3684F Pet Lover Mighty Mite for only 89 bucks with free shipping at Amazon. The reviews were strong so I figured I’d give it a try. I LOVE this vacuum. It cleans bare floors great and sucks up pet hair as it was made to do. The only thing that sucks about it is the crappy hose. Its cheap and will sometimes twist BUT I’d still buy it over again. I’ll just shop around and find a better hose.

Also if you’re in the Danville area make an appointment with Tina over at Petco by Target. Tell her you’re with Dancing Creek Farm for VIP treatment. Some breeds its best not to shave them but if you have a lab retriever, or most thick long hair breeds then whack it off! If your dog stays outdoors or is in the sun there is rosk of sun burn so be careful. Your dog will feel so much better and you’ll have a little less hair and easier to clean. Petco in Danville also offers 15.00 baths during the week. If you can’t make it because of work set up a pet sitting service call and we’ll take them.

Pros-

your dog will stink less if they tend to get odors trapped in their long fur

fleas can be easier to see

shaving can reduce shedding (although not eliminate it)

dog will feel cool and comfortable in summer heat, but many will continue to pant if it is hot outside

it is much easier to clean or groom your dog after shaving, especially if they had long fur

Cons-

sunburn is more likely

fleas and mosquitos can reach your dog’s skin more easily

your dog may look funny with the typical “lion cut” (that means that they shave everything except the head, feet, and tail)

it can take a while for the fur to grow back depending on the breed

Yesterday, or was it the day before, my mind is still crazy… I had to put down one of my dogs that I had for 14 years. The whole week was like a haze and depressing because knew I had to do it but couldnt. I probably hung on too long but you know how that is.

I paced, I cried,I tossed and turned in my sleep. I adopted him when he was two, a rescue that had been dropped off in a remote area, the Adirondacks, to fend for himself. In a few weeks he learned to kill and hunt. He was a large akita named Bud. The vet call me begging me to take him. They had him a few months and needed to find a home or put him down. I said no. I then tossed and turned all night and finally they got me to come see him. I didnt think it would work with the dogs i already had, he was aggressive, but I also couldnt see him put down. I took him home kept him my garage and slowly brought him into my home.

I will never forget the time he tried to bite me and I threw myself on him, pinning him down. He was strong as hell and angry. I laid on top of him for 30 minutes until the fight was gone. He never did that again. Instead he became a loyal companion and we had an incredible journey together. He became a loved member of my family.

With him I had two other dogs that passed on due to health reasons. He hung in there and for the next 14 years he remained a faithful companion by my side. He was a cat killer and small animals but I knew this was something he learned to do living in the wild. Loving him along with so many other animals was a challenge but somehow it was worth it.

This past year he became frail and was hard to get up. We went for walks and I would look in his eyes and knew the time was near. I will never forget a night I went into his room, away from every other animals except his faithful, also rescued Wonder Dog… he laid his head in my lap, moaned and then gave me a serious look. Wonder Dog began to cry and whimper.

This past week I paced, He couldnt get up, pooped on his bed and i knew the day was getting close. Wonder Dog also paced and cried. One morning I wake up out of a dead sleep, it was 4 am and I found him stiff, unable to get up under a pile of poo. I crawled down onto the floor and held him. I looked in his eyes and although blind in one the other penetrated me and I knew it was time.

It has got to be the hardest thing in the world. that final journey. When you know you must say goodbye but you’re just not ready… you’re never ready. Part of you wants to step away and not see what will happen but another part of you knows that you MUST be there, say goodbye and hold him as he leaves this life. My nephew loaded him into the van. I cried the whole way there. I wrapped him in my comforter I had for 10 years, my scent. He laid there confused but knowing.

I held him in my arms as the vet came out to the van and gave him the injection. He looked at me. He starred and them his stare went blank. Some strange peace came over me. I couldnt even believe I did that but I did and then we wrapped him up in that green comforter and I brought him back to the farm where my nephew had a place for him.

Sometimes I go to feed him and remember he’s gone. Sometimes I walk to the window and see the mound. I think about what flowers I’ll plant there or how I can honor this big wonderful dog that brought so much love into my life. No matter how many animals I have or will ever have, there is a void, a sadness that is unparalleled to anything. No matter your beliefs of reincarnation and death, your hearts feels empty and the pain penetrates you. But then you have moments when you feel this great light flood over you and you realize that love, that unconditional love was worth every drop of pain.

My sweet handsome boy. I love you, miss you and know in my heart that one day I shall see you again.
