In the winter months or during a lot of rain we give the dogs hot lavender towel treatments. We have a special cooler that also gets warm. Towels are placed in a sink of hot water and essential oil to soak. The towels are then stored to keep hot in the steamer.
We always start by wiping the inside of ears, then neck, belly, under arms and feet, especially between toes. This holistic treatment feels wonderful and calming for the dogs. They just love love it! It’s also a great way to keep skin fungus and other bacteria at bay during wet times or going in and out of warm cabins.
You can do this at home. Always use pure essential oils. We use an oil we get from Amazon NOW Foods Lavender Oil, 2 ounce. Of course we buy extra large bottles! You can purchase plain white massage towels Utopia 100% Cotton Salon Towels, Easy Care, Ringspun Cotton for Maximum Softness and Absorbency, 24-Pack – White (16″ x 27″) In a normal size kitchen sink fill with hot water and add 10-15 drop of lavender oil.
Natural Flea and Tick Control
Our preferred way to treat fleas and ticks is to treat the ground and area, not the dog. So many flea and tick control products are dangerous or they don’t work at all. Each spring, right after danger of frost we use 10 Million Live Beneficial Nematodes Sc – Flea and Fly Exterminator. These work fantastic and help with many other garden pest. The nematodes eat the flea larvae before hatching.
Even though it works very well we still get the occasional (rare) infestation or if we take the dogs hiking on the trails. If you take your dog to the park, daycare or anywhere there is danger of fleas and ticks you should use something safe that keeps the fleas and ticks from jumping on them. Using the same method as described above with hot towels- fill your sink with hot water and add The 8-10 drops of each oil:
Lemongrass (Large 4 ounce) Best Essential Oil, Citronella & Grapefruit Essential oils.
Amazon sells all of these together at a very low price. See the link below-
The above oils can also be placed into a bottle of carrier oil such as organic coconut oil, jojoba or even mixed with witch hazel. If you take a cup of coconut oil (soften) mix 10 drops of each oil. If you’d like it to smell better try adding a little tangerine oil. Rub the oils on your hands and then onto your dogs coat rubbing it in so it makes contact with the skin. Always make sure the oils are mixed well before applying on your dog’s skin or touching it yourself. Be sure to get tail, belly and legs. This mixture can also be used on you to prevent biting insects. Try using this oil combination is an essential oil diffuser on your patio for mosquitoes and flies. The diffuser I really love is Aromatherapy Diffuser, Essential Oil Cool Mist Humidifier with Color Changing lights for Home Appliance Light Bamboo by Bellasentials. In fact I have a few of these I use for various oils.
Dog Separation Anxiety
No one can know exactly what triggers a dog to have anxiety to the point they become destructive to themselves and property. I hate giving dogs pharmaceutical drugs unless there really isn’t any other choice. My first option will always be holistic and natural. I would first change a dogs diet to as pure a diet as possible removing preservatives and harmful ingredients that are found in most foods today. At the farm we feed an organic grain free Turkey food available for sale through us. Another food I would recommend that has limited ingredients is TUFFY’S PET FOOD 131643 Tuffy Pure Vita Grain Free Turkey and Sweet Potato Food for Dogs, 25-Pound. I’ve also use essential oils in a diffuser placed in the area you leave your dog. The oils I use the most is lavender. Dog respond wonderfully to essentials oils. You can also use the hot towel therapy for an anxious dog.
Hot Spots, Dry Patches and Skin Rashes
At the farm we keep a container of cold pressed organic coconut oil Nature’s Way Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil, 32-Ounce with a generous amount of lavender oil mixed in. Lavender is one of the few oils that can be applied to scratch neat. It is a natural antibacterial and will also help with pain relief. The combination of coconut oil and lavender is excellent for hot spots, dry elbows and simple scratches. We also use Natural Path Silver Wings Dietary Mineral Supplement, Colloidal Silver, 500 PPM, 4 fl. oz. / 120 ml for hot spots and sores.
Essential oils can be a great addition to you and your dogs health, however it does not replace good veterinary care. If you have any questions please feel free to email me firstname.lastname@example.org
